Instructions for joining the grid

In order to work in the grid you have to fulfill these 3 conditions

  1. Obtain a certificate from a Certificate Authority (CA)
  1. Sign in for a Virtual Organisation (VO)
(the spelling of organisation is also correct and is the one used in the grid)
  1. Get access to a User Interface (UI) server and upload your certificate.

Requesting a certificate

This is the first step. Other steps cannot be performed before you obtain your certificate.

Important prerequisite: You must use your own working computer and your regular browser to do it.

The reason is that when you request the certificate, a private-public key is generated and stored within the browser.

When the certificate is signed by the Certificate Authority (CA), it must use the same keys.

So don't change browser type (i.e. request from IE and try to load from FireFox) and do not clean the browser cache between the time you request the certificate and the time you receive it!
The current browsers currently verified are MSIE 6 & 7 and Mozilla. We recommend using one of them for requesting the certificate.
Once a certificate is obtained, it can be imported to other browser types.

This stage divides into 3 steps

  1. Request the certificate

  2. Meet one of the Registration Authorities (RA) to validate your identity

  3. Export the certificate

Go to https://certificate.iucc.ac.il/

And click on "Request a certificate" on the left.

You can choose your browser type, or automatic browser detection.

Fill in the form as shown below.

  • Select the correct choices in the select boxes, exactly as depicted in the screenshot below.
  • Fill your official E-Mail address in the E-mail field (instead of, e.g., hotmail account).
  • Fill the same mail for the alternative mail
  • The institution and the Registration Authority should be your own and not TAU (obviously)

Next, you will have to come personally with your identity card/passport to one of the Registration Authorities (RAs) listed below

Please go first to https://certificate.iucc.ac.il/pub/, click on "CA Info" Tab-> "Get CA Certificate"->"CA certificate in format CRT"
This will install the CA certificate, so it will be recognized as a valid CA.

In order to install your certificate, please use the same link (https://certificate.iucc.ac.il/pub/) in "Certificates" tab->Valid and check whether your name is shown at the end of the list (use the Extra References >> link to jump directly to the end of the list).

If it is, click on the Serial certificate number link (left to your name) and click on the link "Install the certificate"   Using the same browser you asked the certificate with

The installation is straight forward. For MSIE 6+7, see installation snapshots. Mozilla is also very simple.

If your installation was successful you should see the certificate in your browser. You will have to export the certificate (including the private key) to a file that will be put on the UI machine.

In order to export your certificate to a file, follow the snap shots below (MSIE 6+7 and FireFox currently verified)

Be sure that you are asked for a password (or else you are not exporting the private key) and that you remember it!

This can be done only after you've acquired your certificate. Safra course users should join the South East Europe (SEE) VO

Different VOs have different forms to join them.

You'll get a confirmation from the VO administrator.

Obtain access to a User Interface (UI)

Users should consult their IT manager for obtaining an account on the UI server.

TAU users have the UI installed on all the CS servers (e.g. nova)

Safra worshop users: Please create a directory under your home directory called .globus (the dot is part of the name)
Please put the certificate file you saved in step 1.3 (a file containing your private key, protected by password) in the .globus directory you created.
